Application overview

Large metal workpieces require control of both position and orientation during handling and process changes. AUREK pairs a pneumatic industrial manipulator with custom clamping and turning tooling. The manipulator carries the lifting load, and the end tooling maintains the grip while turning. One operator uses a handle to guide movement and positioning, reducing direct manual holding and changes of hand position.

Configuration features

  • The end tooling connects clamping and turning. It changes the workpiece orientation while maintaining the grip, reducing changes of hand position and repeated lifting.
  • The manipulator carries the workpiece's lifting load while one operator guides it using a handle, helping control the direction of movement and target position.
  • The tooling contact structure matches the workpiece's available gripping areas, combining pickup, orientation changes and placement at the workstation into one operating sequence.

Operating sequence

  1. Guide the tooling to the workpiece gripping position, align the contact areas and clamp. Check the gripping status and workpiece orientation.
  2. Slowly lift the workpiece clear of the support surface and guide it to an operating position with space for the orientation change.
  3. Maintain the grip, use the turning mechanism to adjust the workpiece orientation, then guide the manipulator toward the target fixture or placement area.
  4. Align with the target position and lower slowly. Release the tooling after the workpiece is stably supported, then withdraw and begin the next cycle.

Selection and configuration

  • Profile-matched contact components or protective pads can be selected for the workpiece contour and surface requirements to match available load-bearing areas.
  • The turning mechanism can be selected for the center of gravity and pick-and-place orientations, with suitable turning travel for orientation changes between workstations.
  • Manipulator mounting and working range can be selected for the workstation layout, accounting for pick-and-place heights, the handling path and operating space.

Frequently asked questions

How does the operator turn the workpiece?

The operator first clamps and lifts the workpiece, then controls the turning mechanism using the operating handle to adjust its orientation before guiding the manipulator to the placement position. The grip is maintained throughout the orientation change.

How is tooling configured for metal workpieces with different shapes?

Profile-matched contact components, adjustable clamping structures or quick-change tooling can be selected for the workpiece contour, center of gravity and available gripping areas, matching clamping and turning to the relevant family of workpieces.
